Hymn Descants

• Each descant -- whether single or double -- is printed on its own staff for maximum clarity
• The hymn melody is printed on its own staff underneath the descant part(s) -- no need to consult a hymnal when playing melody on some verses
• Specific hymn numbers in TLH (The Lutheran Hymnal), LW (Lutheran Worship), LBW (Lutheran Book of Worship) and HS98 (Hymn Supplement 98), with which the descants are harmonically compatible, are clearly indicated
• When necessary, alternate notes are included -- and clearly marked -- to assure compatibility with all prescribed hymn numbers despite slight variations in their harmonizations
• When a given hymntune occurs in more than one key across all hymnals, the descant is written in the higher key so that, in addition to embellishing the final verse with the descant, an upward key change from the previous verses can be executed
• All descants are available for either C (e.g., flute, oboe, violin) or Bb (e.g., trumpet, clarinet) instruments
